In class we have discussed the functions of repetition and simple language in fairy tales, taking the Grimm Brothers’ “Little Red Cap” as an example: telling the same story over and over in simple, straightforward language imbues the tale with a sense of permanence, naturalness, and facticity. Your assignment is to analyze how Angela Carter’s “The Company of Wolves” and Tanith Lee’s “Wolfland” use language to challenge the “natural” “facts” of the Grimms’ “Little Red.” You may take into consideration Charles Perrault’s “Little Red Riding Hood” as well, but this is not required. Your essay must include a discussion of the title and the final sentence of both Carter’s and Lee’s tales.
In developing your analysis, you may wish to consider some (or all) of the following:
Structure and tone of each tale
Essay length: 1500-1750 words total: approximately 5 pages, typed, double-spaced, 11- or 12-point font, margins 1.25 inches (300-350 words per page, 1500-1750 words total). Do not use wide margins, large headers, or large font to fill up space! We will look at word counts, rather than number of pages, to determine essay length.
