You are writing an argument about a current problem in your field.
-You may focus solely on the causes of this problem, or solutions to the problem, or you may argue about some other aspect of the problem. I’ve left the parameters wide so that you can follow the path that’s most interesting to you. But hopefully the end product will be relevant and applicable to your future career.
-Because you are not conducting original research or putting together an independent study, your paper will take the form of a literature review. You will still be making an argument and sticking to your own narrow agenda, but all of your support will come from previous publications instead of independent research. Again, see Brandon Hidaka’s review, “Depression as a disease of modernity,” for a model.
Your thesis is very specific and developed. Example: focused on no more than two supporting reasons.
You build a conversation between authors/experts.
You are bringing something new to the discussion.
-The point of this assignment is to focus on something small that has not received a great deal of attention within your discipline.
You include examples to support every claim that you make.
You include style and efficiency in your writing.
